Creative Writing Contest for Teens

Creative teens with a passion for writing can find their voices through Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s 2010 Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest. Open to all high school students (grades 9 through 12) in Allegheny County, the contest is an opportunity for teens to showcase their writing talents, improve skills and have their work published in an anthology which will distributed to all area libraries. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first ($250) and second ($100) place entries in three categories: poetry, short fiction and narrative nonfiction. All entries must be received by May 21, 2010.

Workshops led by experienced writers will be held in April and May to help teens polish their entries and expand their skills. Attendance at a creative writing workshop is optional and not required to enter the Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest. Workshop space is limited. Please call 412-578-2599 to register.

Siobhan Vivian will lead several creative writing exercises aimed at inspiring teens to produce great fiction. The interactive exercises will touch on three foundations of creative writing - plot, character and prose.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Brian O’Neill will preach the underappreciated virtues of short words, short sentences, simplicity, precision and wit in storytelling. He will show students how to cut to the chase and draw readers in.

Ralph Munn served as Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Director from 1928 until his retirement in 1964. During his 36-year tenure he was responsible for significant changes to the Library, including the creation of a young adults reading room, which has evolved into the Library’s Teen Department. Prior to his death in 1975, Munn provided the Library with an endowment to continue serving the young adults of Allegheny County by providing opportunities for creative writing.

To enter the Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest teens must submit original prose by May 21, 2010. All entries must be submitted electronically to teens@carnegielibrary.org with “Ralph Munn Entry” in the subject line. This LearnIt is hosted by CommuniTeach.
 CommuniTeach engages young Pittsburghers in their communities through the use
 of an online platform that facilitates free, in-person skill exchanges.
 Individuals simply enter the skills they can teach and learn into our website 
and are automatically matched with community members to set up free, in-person
 skill exchanges. So far, people have used our service to swap skills like
 bartending, blues piano, and Greek cooking. By giving young Pittsburghers a hip 
and easy way to share their skills, talents, and passions with fellow community

Job Summary:

The Youth Employment program coordinator will work in a team environment to stimulate change in the local workforce development system to better service young people ages 17-21. This staff person will case manage the youths in collaboration with the schools, social service providers, employers and others to create a coordinated and effective youth workforce system. This position reports to the Youth Development Director.

Duties/Responsibilities:

- Ongoing reporting on program participant’s progress to the Youth Development Director.

- Participate in the implementation of BGC’s proposal and contract in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the City of Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh Partnership and Youth Works.

- Assist in the management and recruitment process of youth employment program participants.

- With assistance from the program manager, develop initiatives and other components that support and nurture the overall BGC workforce development program.

- Identify partners and develop relationships to implement paid/unpaid training activities.

- Networking with existing and new institutional partners for supportive service partnerships and worksites for participants

- Manage the progress of all participants. Work with worksite supervisors to design and implement an individual plan of action based upon each participant’s needs.

- Help in the building of announcements, bulletins, and/or articles that are submitted to the BGC’s monthly Bulletin and other publications (newspapers, magazines, newsletters)

- Assist in creating flyers and other correspondence sent to participants, their families and partners involved with the project.

- Coordinate the collection of timesheets twice monthly for all program participants – collecting timesheets from participants or worksite supervisors, calculating worksite/training hours, submission of hours to the bookkeeper.

- Manage assigned caseload of youth participants in the BGC/WIA Employment Programs.

- Responsible for making sure that all participants’ individual folders contain all pertinent documentation/information

- Responsible for the timely submission of all pertinent documentation to the City and YouthWorks

- Supervise and coordinate the training sessions

- Maintain and coordinate the quarterly calendar of training and/or other activities.

Required Qualifications:

-At least a Bachelor’s Degree in education, social work, or related field.

-Experience in workforce development or educational environment.

-Experience working with community groups and urban youth.

-Desire to engage parents in program.

-Case management experience a plus.

-Flexible and computer literate.

-Ability to engage urban youth.

-Access to a car

-Strong communication skills.

-Currently have or ability to acquire Act 33/34 and FBI clearances

Position 1: Community LEARNS Assistant Site Coordinator
Status: Part-time, 20-30 hours per week
Compensation: $13 - $16/Hour, commensurate with experience/training
Program Sites: Pittsburgh Brashear, Peabody, Schenley, and/or University Prep

This position will assist in the coordination of the educational services, employment services, mentoring, case management, and social and recreational programming of the Community LEARNS program. Positions are available working with students at Brashear, Peabody, Schenley at Reizenstein, and/or University Prep. The ideal candidate will be able to lead urban youths, have strong supervision, communication and computer skills, possess an ability to take written and oral directions, enjoy working with teens, have a PA driver’s license and insurance, and be able to drive a 15-passenger van.


Position 2: Academic Tutor
Status: Part time, 10-15 hours per week, flexible
Compensation: $12.50-$15.00 per hour, commensurate with experience/training
Program Sites: Pittsburgh Peabody, Schenley, and Brashear

This position will tutor 9th–12th grade youths who are voluntarily participating in afterschool program. Duties include math and literacy tutoring and homework help. Tutoring and academic credit recovery software utilized, training provided. Tutoring offered to students between 3 and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday. The ideal candidate will be strong in reading and math, have previous teaching and or tutoring experience, be available during afterschool hours (normally 3 to 6 p.m.), and enjoy working with high school students. The Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation is hiring Summer Youth Employment Staff to work in a team effort, stimulating change in the local workforce development system, to better service young people ages 14-21. "My Money, My Life" is a financial literacy program for teens 16- to 19-years-old in Allegheny County, held Feb. 11, 18, 25, and March 4 and 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. (dinner will be served). The Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation (BGC) is a nonprofit community organization based in the Garfield neighborhood whose mission is to better the social, economic and physical fabric of the Bloomfield, Garfield and Friendship neighborhoods by engaging and inspiring members of the community.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

This staff person will assist the Youth Development Director with all projects falling under Youth Development component of the BGC. The youth Development component is a complex component that requires a person that possesses strong management, writing and organizing skills as well as someone who is dynamic enough to respond to a wide variety of challenges that need to be addressed to ensure that participants in any of the Youth Development programs can be successful. This position will be assisting with:

· Organizing complex academic development issues for local youth education organizations;

· Coordinating youth employment programs;

· Developing networks on a variety of organizational and administrative levels;

· Managing and coordinating diverse community and neighborhood services;

· Coordinating assigned activities with key stakeholders in the community;

· Strengthening and building upon existing relationships with various foundation, nonprofit and for-profit entities;

· Analyzing situations accurately and recommending effective courses of action;

· Assisting with the development of project implementation schedules and/or timelines;

· Planning and organizing work tasks to meet schedules and/or timelines set for project implementation;

· Routinely monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of programmatic service delivery;

· Creating persuasive written and verbal proposals/reports; and

· Compiling and preparing reports, proposals, and other documents.

Qualifications: Requires a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related area with at least 4 years of experience in the field or in a related area; master’s degree in education, social work or public policy preferred. Additionally, it is expected that the successful candidates will:

· Have current driver license

· Possess strong written communication skills;

· Have access to a vehicle;

· Be willing to work a flexible schedule;

· Be computer literate; and have or will obtain both Act 33 and 34 clearances

Community Art Day

The MGR Foundation has been working with the immigrant and refugee students at Arsenal Middle School as part of our "Murals Program: Violence Prevention Through the Arts." As an extension of this work, we have designed a series of monthly events called Community Art Days. Come and spend a few hours creating art and building relationships with these new neighbors. All are welcome to these FREE events!

Pittsburgh's "Lights On Afterschool" Celebration

About 700 people attended the "Lights On Aferschool" Celebration, part of a nationwide effort to celebrate children's learning and bring attention to the importance of after school programs to children, families, and communities.

The event at Peabody High School was organized by Wireless Neighborhoods, and attracted about 200 adults and 500 students.
