Afterschool Site Coordinator

Position: Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation Afterschool Site Coordinator Pittsburgh learns afterschool program

Status: Part-time

Compensation: $13-$15/hour, varies with experience

Location: Fort Pitt ALA Elementary- garfield

Job Summary:

This position will implement age and grade appropriate Language Arts and Math lessons for kindergarten through second grade students. In addition, the coordinator will work in partnership with the Family Resources BJWL K-5 in all activities related to the afterschool program.

The Coordinator will ensure successful implementation of all objectives and ensure that outcomes are achieved and reported back in a timely manner. This will require staff, among other duties, to collect and be accountable for daily, weekly, quarterly, and yearly student data.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise staff, ensuring appropriate practices in child guidance, supervision and teaching
  • Implement afterschool lessons plans aligned with school day; remediate identified needs
  • Develop/maintain relations with school principal/teachers; Ensure continuity between school and program
  • Develop/implement weekly program schedule, including enrichment activities
  • Monitor and report on overall program performance
  • Play an active role in promoting parental engagement
  • Maintain database of student information
  • Comply with 21st Century guidelines through record reporting
  • Track daily attendance
  • Collect student report cards and standardized assessments from school district
  • Attend Advisory Committee meetings
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field preferred
  • Teaching experience
  • Act 33, 34 and FBI clearances (or ability to obtain them)
  • Technology skills
  • Willingness to work during after school hours
  • Must be available – Monday through Friday after school for programming
  • Commitment – 25 hours per week

Community LEARNS Program Overview

Community LEARNS is an afterschool program with a strong academic focus serving principally lower income and African American students. The main program is offered at Pittsburgh Peabody and includes numerous program components that need to be coordinated to ensure students have the greatest opportunity to have school success including graduation and Promise readiness.

Job Summary

The incumbent coordinates all of the initiatives and services of the Community LEARNS program, working collaboratively with Community LEARNS community, faith, and school partners to plan and administer program services and ensure that all program outcomes are achieved in a timely manner.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Oversees the implementation of the all Wireless Neighborhoods afterschool grants.
  • Ensures all process and program outcomes are being accomplished
  • Manages all components of the Community LEARNS programs including academics/tutoring, college preparation, recreation, and employment.
  • Develops all program components and initiatives.
  • Assists Executive leadership team with the development of all program proposals.
  • Creates strong working relationship with school principals and other relevant staff, parents and community partners.
  • Recommends staff to be hired for Community LEARNS.
  • Manage the orientation of all new staff and the ongoing development of all program staff
  • Supervises all program staff.
  • Monitors student enrollment and participation rates and works with staff to take appropriate corrective actions when necessary.
  • Monitors and adjusts overall staffing of program sites/services.
  • Develops and monitors mechanisms for tracking all program outcome data.
  • Develops all program and funder reports.
  • Creates weekly participant and staff schedules with input from coordinators and monitors the daily staff schedules that are created.
  • Monitors program documentation/data for all sites, including but not limited to individual participant files, registration and release forms, participant Education and Career Success Plans (ECS’s), service documentation, daily participant sign-in and sign-out sheets, monthly attendance spreadsheets, weekly reports, monthly reports, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Oversees the development of all student Academic Service Plans (ASPs) and ensures that all participants are participating in appropriate program components.
  • Regularly collects data from school on attendance, grades, standardized test scores, disciplinary actions, etc. to connect youth to the appropriate afterschool academic services. Develops and maintains a long-term tracking system for the data.
  • Works with school counselors, Community LEARNS staff and other community partners to ensure that students are receiving the most appropriate set of afterschool academic and support services.
  • Documents the program model so that it can be shared with other organizations seeking to serve high school and middle school students.
  • Performs any and all other duties assigned for which the employee is qualified and physically able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Education, Public Administration or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • At least 3 years of program management experience
  • Criminal, Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Clearances
  • A valid PA drivers license and functioning vehicle

Working Conditions

The incumbent generally performs the duties of the position at a desk or workstation. He/she will have extensive direct contact with clients and will spend some time out of the office. Extensive communication with other agencies, school personnel and employers is necessary. The position involves using a computer, modem, copy machine, telephone, and periodic automobile transportation will be necessary. The position involves working with highly confidential information.

Part-Time Jobs Working with Urban Youths

Position 1: Community LEARNS Assistant Site Coordinator
Status: Part-time, 20-30 hours per week
Compensation: $13 - $16/Hour, commensurate with experience/training
Program Sites: Pittsburgh Brashear, Peabody, Schenley, and/or University Prep

This position will assist in the coordination of the educational services, employment services, mentoring, case management, and social and recreational programming of the Community LEARNS program. Positions are available working with students at Brashear, Peabody, Schenley at Reizenstein, and/or University Prep. The ideal candidate will be able to lead urban youths, have strong supervision, communication and computer skills, possess an ability to take written and oral directions, enjoy working with teens, have a PA driver’s license and insurance, and be able to drive a 15-passenger van.


Position 2: Academic Tutor
Status: Part time, 10-15 hours per week, flexible
Compensation: $12.50-$15.00 per hour, commensurate with experience/training
Program Sites: Pittsburgh Peabody, Schenley, and Brashear

This position will tutor 9th–12th grade youths who are voluntarily participating in afterschool program. Duties include math and literacy tutoring and homework help. Tutoring and academic credit recovery software utilized, training provided. Tutoring offered to students between 3 and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday. The ideal candidate will be strong in reading and math, have previous teaching and or tutoring experience, be available during afterschool hours (normally 3 to 6 p.m.), and enjoy working with high school students. Motivational Youth Event in East Liberty

The Greater Pittsburgh Afterschool Peer Network (GPAPN) in conjunction with the Allegheny Department of Human Services is having a motivational youth leadership event entitled "Its a Great Day, You Can Do It," designed for middle and high school students, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Avenue, in East Liberty. Some members of GPAPN have already secured seats for their youths and chaperones. However, there are approximately 115 seats still available that will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
