Become a Tutor

As an OASIS tutor, you can help a child learn to love reading and learning in grades K – 4. OASIS volunteers and Pittsburgh Public Elementary Schools in your neighborhood work together to help young children build reading skills and positive attitudes towards learning.

Tutor Training: August Session
Tuesdays, August 3 and 10, 2010
10:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.
Required two-day training is provided free along with all clearances, books, and materials.

Part-Time Jobs Working with Urban Youths

Below are two excellent part-time opportunities for individuals who want to work with students attending Pittsburgh Public Schools. To apply for either position, please email jobs@wireless-neighborhoods.org.

Position 1: Community LEARNS Assistant Site Coordinator
Status: Part-time, 20-30 hours per week
Compensation: $13 - $16/Hour, commensurate with experience/training
Program Sites: Pittsburgh Brashear, Peabody, Schenley, and/or University Prep

This position will assist in the coordination of the educational services, employment services, mentoring, case management, and social and recreational programming of the Community LEARNS program. Positions are available working with students at Brashear, Peabody, Schenley at Reizenstein, and/or University Prep. The ideal candidate will be able to lead urban youths, have strong supervision, communication and computer skills, possess an ability to take written and oral directions, enjoy working with teens, have a PA driver’s license and insurance, and be able to drive a 15-passenger van.


Position 2: Academic Tutor
Status: Part time, 10-15 hours per week, flexible
Compensation: $12.50-$15.00 per hour, commensurate with experience/training
Program Sites: Pittsburgh Peabody, Schenley, and Brashear

This position will tutor 9th–12th grade youths who are voluntarily participating in afterschool program. Duties include math and literacy tutoring and homework help. Tutoring and academic credit recovery software utilized, training provided. Tutoring offered to students between 3 and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday. The ideal candidate will be strong in reading and math, have previous teaching and or tutoring experience, be available during afterschool hours (normally 3 to 6 p.m.), and enjoy working with high school students. Part-Time Tutors Needed

Wireless Neighborhoods has part-time positions available for tutors of 9th – 12th grade youths who are voluntarily participating in afterschool program. Duties includes math and literacy tutoring and homework help. Tutoring and academic credit recovery software utilized, training provided. Tutoring offered to students between 2:30 – 5 p.m. and/or 6 – 7:30 p.m. Mondays – Thursdays, and 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays. These positions pay $15/ hour and are approximately 10-15 hours a week.

Under the Wireless Neighborhoods model, community and faith organizations collaborate with each other and with their neighborhood schools to deliver traditional and technology supported afterschool curricula that is aligned with state and Pittsburgh Public School standards.

Ideal candidates for all positions will:

· Have an education degree or will be currently pursuing an one, preferred

· Be content area experts,

· Have a history of teaching/tutoring

· Want to work with urban children to help them realize their potential, raise their GPA’s, and increase their math and literacy standardized test scores.

· Have previous experience leading groups

· Have some experience preparing and delivering academic lessons, preferred

Requirements for all positions:

· Act 33/34 clearances (or ability to obtain them)

· Participation in continuous professional development opportunities, some of which fall on evenings or weekends, throughout the year.

Tutors Needed


Part-time positions available tutoring 9th – 12th grade Peabody High School youth who are voluntarily participating in the Community LEARNS afterschool program. Tutoring includes math and literacy tutoring and homework help. Tutoring and academic credit recovery software utilized, training provided.
Tutoring offered to students 2:45 PM – 6 PM Mondays – Thursdays and 10 AM – 3 PM on Saturdays. Positions available immediately! Locations: Bloomfield-Garfield Community Activity Center at 113 N. Pacific Ave. (15224) in Garfield; Mt. Ararat Community Activity Center at 271 Paulson St. (15206) in East Liberty; Peabody High School at 515 N. Highland Avenue (15206) in East Liberty

Free Tutoring!

You may not know that many of our Pittsburgh Public School High School students are eligible for free tutoring, including students who attend Peabody, Schenley, and Westinghouse. The deadline for students to apply for this free tutoring is October 15th.

There will be two provider fairs to learn more about the program:

Tuesday, October 2nd from 5 to 7 PM at Pittsburgh Oliver High School, 2323 Brighton Rd. (North Side)
Saturday October 6th from 1- 3 PM at Pittsburgh Frick, 107 Thackeray Street (Oakland)

You or someone you know might be interested in this additional academic support, so please pass this information along. We also encourage you to pass it along to your networks generally so that we can help to insure that this valuable student resource for academic support is accessible to everyone who needs it.
