Career Connections Charter High School will be hosting a Health Fair on Wednesday, June 8, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Estelle Campbell Boys & Girls Club, 5432 Butler Street, in Lawrenceville. Approximately 20 vendors from sites such as Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Allegheny County 911, Adagio Health, Planned Parenthood of Western Pa., and the American Red Cross will be on hand to discuss healthy lifestyle choices, give screenings and present new information on health and wellness. Marcellus Shale Action Group Event

Part-time Housekeeper Jobs

Eastside Neighborhood Employment Center (ENEC) is assisting Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, located on Penn Avenue in Lawrenceville, in recruiting for part-time housekeeper positions. The Lawrenceville Resource Fair and Celebration Day will be from 12:00 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009. This event will be taking place near the Butler Street entrance of the Allegheny Cemetery.

Our vision is to connect residents of Lawrenceville to resources like local businesses, non-profit organizations, churches, and more. There will also be entertainment, activities for kids, and food from local restaurants.

"Art All Night" Returns to L'ville

Lawrenceville Art All Night—a beloved annual celebration of arts, community, and creativity—will accompany spring in Pittsburgh for the 12th straight year. This year's all-night art marathon takes place on Saturday, April 25, starting at 6 p.m., and concludes on Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m.

Art All Night 2009 will take place at 3510 Smallman Street, in the brand-new Red Warehouse at 35th and Smallman. In addition to art, the event will feature live music, performances, and interactive art activities for both children and adults.

"Boys Will Be Boys" Exhibit

Fe Gallery proudly presents "Boys Will Be Boys," a national exhibition that includes regional artists Garry Pyles, Pittsburgh; Richard Schnap, Pittsburgh; and Paul Kuhrman, Mars, Pa. Community Clean-Up in Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville will be sparkling on Saturday, July 12, when six organizations unite for July’s Community Clean-Up Day. Lawrenceville United, the Lawrenceville Corporation, the Regional Internship Center of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh Cares, the Lawrenceville Tree Tenders, and the Pennsylvania League of Young Voters will join forces to eliminate litter and support Lawrenceville charities.

Volunteers are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at Lawrenceville United, 4825 Butler Street, for breakfast and orientation. With funding from Operation Weed and Seed, Lawrenceville United will provide gloves, tools, equipment, and garbage/recycling bags. Volunteers will then head out into the neighborhood to clean up priority sites, and the Lawrenceville Tree Tenders will weed and mulch street trees. Organized by Lawrenceville United and the Lawrenceville Corporation, Community Clean-Ups happen the second Saturday from April through October, and typically draw around 30 residents each month.

By 1:30 p.m., volunteers will be back at Lawrenceville United to enjoy a BBQ in the parking lot. DJ Selecta will spin music as participants from the organizations mingle with Lawrenceville neighbors.

Learn to Tend Trees

Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest (FPUF) has announced its offerings of Tree Tender courses throughout the city. Tree Tenders learn to plant and care for young street trees, increasing a tree's chance of survival and prolonging their life in the urban environment. FPUF is an environmental nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the city's vitality by restoring and protecting the urban forest through community tree maintenance, planting, education, and advocacy.

According to the 2005 City of Pittsburgh Street Tree Inventory, the city has approximately 30,000 street trees, and over 3,000 of those trees have been removed due to disease, vandalism, or neglect. Thousands more trees are at risk of being removed if they do not receive much-needed care. FPUF and the City Forestry Division are working to improve the urban forest, but residents can play an important role in increasing its health and reversing its decline.

Registration for Tree Tender courses is open online at www.PittsburghForest.org/TreeTenders. Local tree experts provide instruction, and the course covers everything from tree biology to planting and pruning. A $40 donation is requested to participate in the course, and scholarships are available. The course includes three evening sessions. Dinner will be provided at each session, and participants will receive a Tree Tender safety vest and certificate upon successful completion of the program. Participants may sign-up for continuing education workshops that cover pruning and tree identification in greater detail. Upon completion of an additional ten hours of volunteer participation at FPUF tree care and planting events, Tree Tenders will receive a pair of hand pruners.

Additionally, through TreeVitalize, a joint project of Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, neighborhoods with certified Tree Tenders who are able to organize neighborhood tree plantings will be eligible to receive ten or more street trees for their communities. TreeVitalize will work with community groups, nonprofits, and municipal agencies to plant 20,000 trees throughout the region by 2012.
