Pick Up Penn

Join community members, neighborhood residents, and volunteers from all over Pittsburgh to help clean up Penn Avenue on Saturday, September 18 in an annual neighborhood clean-up. For two hours, volunteers will divide into teams and race to pick up trash and recyclables, competing for various prizes donated by restaurants, stores, and galleries along the avenue. Volunteers also receive free coffee and Einstein’s bagels before the pick-up begins. If interested in volunteering, please RSVP by sending an email to emily@friendship-pgh.org. Pick Up Penn will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers check in at Edge Studio on 5411 Penn Ave. For any questions or concerns, call Emily Parkinson at 412-441-6147 x 1.

Yard Debris Collection

The City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works Bureau of Environmental Services advises that city residents can dispose of yard debris to be composted on Saturday May 22, 2010 by placing materials out for residential collection by city refuse crews. Yard debris should be placed at the curb/alley for collection before 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 22. Bag Leaves for Collection: Residents must bag leaves in paper bags only and place them out at your normal refuse collection site. Bags should NOT exceed 35 pounds. Leaves in plastic bags will not be accepted. Tree Branches and Bushes: Cut, bundle and tie branches and bushes in lengths not exceeding 5 ft. in length. Brush diameter should not exceed four (4) inches. Please note that City Refuse Crews will NOT collect dirt, rocks, stones or cement. Yard debris left at the curb by contracted lawn care workers or independent contractors will not be collected by city crews.
