Free Bike Helmets

Pennsylvania law requires all children under 12 to wear an approved helmet while riding a bicycle. Bike Pittsburgh has generously supplied the Bloomfield Development Corp. with bike helmets in a range of sizes, which they are providing free to Bloomfield residents. If you know a child or young adult who needs a helmet, or are interested in more information, call the BDC at 412-681-8800.

Garfield Business Owner in the News

This morning, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ran a front-page story
on Garfield business owner Jerry Kraynick, co-director of "The Bike Before Christmas," a program to fix up used bikes for kids in need. The program is a collaboration between the Pittsburgh Police and Kraynick's Bike Shop.

Time to search through your garage or basement for a bike to donate. Also, Mr. Kraynick is looking for volunteer bike mechanics to help him - last year he and volunteers repaired 230 bikes in time for Christmas.

Mr. Kraynick's shop is at 5003 Penn Ave., and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, except Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The shop doesn't sell new bikes, but repairs them.
