PropertyTax Relief Deadline

State Rep. Lisa Bennington, D-Allegheny, is reminding local seniors and others who may qualify for property tax relief that the deadline to apply for this year’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is Dec. 31.

“The property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been expanded this year, meaning even more people qualify,” Bennington said. “I am encouraging eligible homeowners and renters to take advantage of this opportunity for real property tax relief. If residents have a question about eligibility they can stop by or call my office.”

When determining income eligibility, Bennington said that seniors have to calculate only half of their Social Security benefits. For instance if a resident’s annual Social Security benefit is $24,000, only $12,000 of that amount counts as income.

Under the expanded eligibility guidelines, homeowners whose household income is up to $35,000 and renters with income of up to $15,000 can receive up to $650 back from the state.

To qualify for the program, residents must be 65 or older, 50 or older and widowed, or 18 or older with a permanent disability. The program is funded by the state lottery, not tax dollars.

Last year’s participants should have received an application in the mail; people who have not applied before or those who need help with their applications should contact Bennington’s constituent service office at 412-361-2043 or visit the office at 1808 Chislett St.
