Improved Website for 2013 Court-Ordered Reassessment Values Available

The Allegheny County website (http://www.alleghenycounty.us/index.aspx ) has been updated with useful information about the new reassessment values (building information, comparables used, etc.) and a thorough list of frequently asked questions.
The site includes full information on each property, including general information, building information, images of the property, and comparables used to set the value. Currently, reassessment information is only available for properties in Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver. Other municipalities will be added to the site as reassessment notices are mailed pursuant to the court order.

West Penn Allegheny Health System’s STAR Center and CCAC Public Safety Institute Offer Free Heartsaver CPR/AED Classes on February 11

Become a Heartsaver for Valentine’s Day! For the second year in a row, West Penn Allegheny Health System’s STAR Center and the Community College of Allegheny County Public Safety Institute will provide free Heartsaver CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) training in honor of Valentine’s Day and Heart Health Month.
Everyone is welcome. Courses will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, at the STAR Center located at 4900 Friendship Ave. (West Penn Hospital School of Nursing building) in Bloomfield.
No pre-registration is required. Course completion cards will be issued on Feb. 11.

Tree Pittsburgh Announces Public Meetings for the Urban Forest Master Plan

As part of Tree Pittsburgh’s Urban Forest Master Planning process, the public is invited to give their input about the City’s trees at meetings beginning January 23^rd. Participants who come to the public meetings will learn the details of the state of Pittsburgh's urban forest, and will have the opportunity to provide detailed input into the plan. All meetings are free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The meetings will be informative and interactive.

Pittsburgh National College Fair

The Pittsburgh National College Fair will be held on Wednesday, February 8, from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., and Thursday, February 9, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center 1000 Fort Duquesne Boulevard in Pittsburgh. The event, sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and free to the public, allows Pittsburgh area students and parents an opportunity to meet with more than 300 national and international, public and private, two-year and four-year colleges, universities, and trade schools.

Students and parents will meet with admission representatives to discuss academics, scholarships, financial aid, student life, athletics, etc., as well as discuss their individual needs with college experts at the fair’s Counseling Center and attend various workshops.

Students should pre-register online (www.gotomyncf.com) and print out a bar code which can be used on-site at the college fair as an electronic ID. Most colleges and universities will have a small scanner at their booth and will collect students’ information by scanning the bar code obtained from the online registration. Pre-registration allows students to spend less time writing out information cards and more time with Admission representatives.

Overview and Position Goals

The mission of the Pittsburgh Connects program and the Project Coordinator is to promote awareness, knowledge, and usage of computers/technology among residents of Garfield and surrounding neighborhoods. The Project Coordinator coordinates all of the initiatives and services of the BGC Pittsburgh CONNECTS program, working collaboratively with diverse but complementary Pittsburgh CONNECTS’ anchor institutions, and community, faith, government and school partners to plan, market and recruit for, and administer program services at the 5321 Penn Avenue lab location and community partner sites. Job Summary

The ideal candidate will be one whom can coordinate all of the initiatives and services of the Pittsburgh CONNECTS program. They will work collaboratively with Pittsburgh CONNECTS’ anchor institutions, diverse and vulnerable populations and in a highly coordinated approach. Key skills and past experience in helping to plan, market and recruit for, and fully administer all key program services is essential. Ensure that all participant and program outcomes related to awareness, knowledge, and usages of computers are achieved.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

Develop and manage the BGC Pittsburgh CONNECTS Lab and online training content to ensure engaging, fun, and informative lessons and workshops that address education, employment, and health and wellness. Ensure the ongoing quality improvement and development of such content and collect and use customer feedback for improvements, measuring needs and satisfaction.

Conduct trainings and implement programs that focus on the core mission of Pittsburgh CONNECTS.
Manages the lab space and all off site technology activity, including overseeing the preparation of PCs for recruited workshop attendees, system integrity, and broadband connectivity.
Recommends staff to be hired for Pittsburgh CONNECTS and manages the orientation and staff scheduling of all new staff and site based volunteers.
Manages the development, utilization, and continuous improvement of: monthly training schedules, the full utilization of all broadband equipment and resources, lessons and workshops.
Keeps an updated and online staff “how-to” manual on standard operating procedures and lesson plans, maintain sign-in and sign-out procedures.
Lead and or assist in the recruitment of volunteers and subject matter expert presenters.
Recruits and markets extensively within the community, and is able to do direct outreach to collaborating partners.
Creates signage, lists, and related end-user tools that direct staff, volunteers, and PC users to Internet sites that contain quality online content.
Creates and maintains a welcoming environment at the Lab that draws participants in.
Monitors enrollment and participation rates and works with staff to take appropriate corrective actions when necessary.
Develops all program and funder reports and assists in grants and proposals seeking funding.
Performs any and all other duties assigned for which the employee is qualified and physically able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The incumbent generally performs the duties of the position at a computer lab location or in the surrounding community. More Help with Assessment Appeals

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced that the City will be stepping up its efforts to provide residents with support in filing informal and formal property assessment appeals, following more than 10 community meetings geared at explaining the property assessment appeal process. The judicially ordered assessment process administered by the County of Allegheny is not something the mayor agrees with and he continues to do everything he can to assist residents through the appeal process.

The Mayor’s office will be teaming up with City Council and the Controller’s office to deploy extra city staff at 12 City senior centers and at the City-County Building Monday through Friday next week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Staff will spend 30-minutes, one-on-one, to help residents submit their appeals, as well as to submit any applicable tax rebates such as the Senior Citizen Property Tax Relief or the Homestead Exclusion. To receive the one-on-one counseling, residents must schedule an appointment by calling the Mayor’s 3-1-1 Response Line. The line will be open extended hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in order to schedule residents.

The deadline for residents to file informal reviews is next Friday, Jan. 13. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, residents must follow a simple two-step process:

Call 3-1-1 to schedule a 30-minute meeting at their local senior center.
Bring their photo I.D. and property assessment notice from the County to the scheduled meeting.

If seniors need transportation to a scheduled meeting, the City may be able to help but we encourage the help of friends, families and neighbors.

Assessment Appeal Process

State Rep. Dom Costa, D-Allegheny, and Pittsburgh City Councilman Bill Peduto will host an educational presentation by the Finance Department of the city of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny County property assessment appeal process.

The event will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the West Penn Hospital Auditorium, 4815 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, 15224.

The Finance Department staff will educate homeowners about the Allegheny County property assessment appeal process and the impact on the city of Pittsburgh property taxes. Costa said staff will not be capable of addressing questions regarding individual assessments.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald also will be in attendance.

On Saturday, November 12, the City Environmental Services will hold a special fall yard debris collection.

Place your leaves in paper bags at your normal refuse collection site. Bags should not weigh more than 35 pounds. No plastic bags will be collected!

Tree branches and bushes need to be cut, bundled, and tied. Bundles exceeding 5 ft in length will not be collected. Tree branch diameter should not exceed four inches.

Job Summary

Eastside Neighborhood Employment Center (ENEC) serves as a regional resource center for job seekers that primarily reside or work in the Garfield, East Liberty and Lawrenceville communities, and manages the employment component of the Garfield Pittsburgh CONNECTS Computer Lab. Pittsburgh CONNECTS serves to expand broadband access across Pittsburgh, and has a four-fold focus on technology, health, education, and employment. Both ENEC and Pittsburgh CONNECTS labs host multiple programs each month, and operate as drop-in centers for the community. On average over 250 people utilize our services each month.

The Employment Outreach Coordinator role is a dynamic and diverse position providing support for the ENEC to implement the employment component of the Pittsburgh CONNECTS lab. Working primarily in the ENEC employment lab, the associate will assist clients with computer use and employment resources. Additionally, this position includes managing and organizing recruitment and marketing efforts for each of the initiatives. In participation with the East End Works, the associate will also assist clients in three satellite employment/tech center sites located in the Pittsburgh area. Recruitment efforts include both social media and outreach work in the community.

The Employment Outreach Associate must be a highly motivated, independent person who has a passion for community engagement, the will to push an agenda, and the expertise to effectively perform this multi-faceted position. The associate will be responsible for the following:

• Manage recruiting and marketing campaigns for ENEC and Lab events and classes, including planning and developing recruitment strategies in the community.

• Provide daily assistance with clients utilizing the drop-in lab around employment resources and computer literacy;

• Assist clients with resume building, online job search and online applications

• Network with regional leaders and local businesses to secure new employment opportunities

• Utilize and update our powerful database system for clients and employers ;

• Performs any and all other duties assigned for which the employee is qualified and physically able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

What it takes to be a Community Outreach Associate:
• Must have at least a bachelor’s degree and be comfortable using computer and internet technology; experience with marketing preferred;
• Proven experience with grassroots organizing and recruitment preferred.

• Excellent writing skills, highly organized, and the ability to easily maintain paper and electronic files;

UPMC is proposing a 1000 - 1200 vehicle parking garage on the Luna/McKean site. The proposed entrances and exits are on Baum Boulevard and Gross Street. An exit only is being proposed for Cypress street. This will affect residents of Gross, Winebiddle, Aspen, Osceola, Powhattan, Cypress, and Woodworth Streets.

The meeting is on Tuesday, Octobber 4, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Wing Auditorium of Shadyside Hospital.

This fall, UPMC St. Margaret Family Health Centers will be giving free flu vaccines to area residents age 65 and older.

Those under the age of 65 without a chronic health condition will be charged $15. Flu vaccines will not be given to anyone under the age of 18. Children under the age of 18 should see their pediatrician to receive a flu shot. Anyone allegric to eggs or chicken should not receive a vaccine.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) today announced the availability of its annual Pennsylvania Student Aid Guide. Both the English and Spanish versions of the Guide can be found under the College Planning section of PHEAA.org.

The Student Aid Guide is Pennsylvania’s most comprehensive financial aid publication and is available at no cost. The Guide offers in-depth information on the federal student aid process and includes details on Pennsylvania’s aid programs, including the need-based State Grant Program. The Guide is a great resource for finding everything students and families need to know about paying for higher education.

The online version of the Guide is interactive and includes links to web pages of particular interest, including:

How to qualify for grants and scholarships and other “free” aid that does not need to be repaid
Information on work-study programs that allow students to earn money to help cover their education costs
Types of loans that are available to students and parents to help pay for their education
Career and salary information and access to checklists, timelines applications and forms that families will need to apply for and receive financial assistance

Each high school counselor’s office in Pennsylvania will receive one printed copy of the Guide with instructions to visit PHEAA.org/counselors to order additional printed copies for their students.

The Guide also offers tools to help students and families create a student budget that estimates annual expenses and provides helpful resources and contact information.

While researching and planning for ways to pay for higher education, students and families are encouraged to contact their high school regarding the availability of Financial Aid Nights during the fall. Tree Pittsburgh and Groupon’s G-Team announce the launch of a new local charitable giving campaign through Groupon. As the first recipient of the G-Team campaign, Tree Pittsburgh is collecting donations to raise trees from seeds to seedlings at the Tree Pittsburgh Tree Nursery.

Donations can be made to the Tree Nursery at http://www.groupon.com/deals/gt-tree-pittsburgh until Thursday, September 1st at midnight.

Using the G-team collective action model, anyone can donate $10 at a time to Tree Pittsburgh’s Tree Nursery and help to raise a tree from seed to seedling over the course of two years. All donors will be invited to a Tree Nursery Happy Hour, which will be the first time the public has been able to visit the nursery.

100% of the proceeds go will be used in Tree Pittsburgh’s Tree Nursery to give seeds everything they need to sprout and grow into restoration-grade seedlings over the following two years. After growing at the Tree Nursery, the seedlings will eventually be used as part of Tree Pittsburgh’s city-wide urban reforestation efforts.

Bat (Not Batman) Alert

Prompted by recent incidents in which people or pets were potentially exposed to rabid bats, the Allegheny County Health Department is urging residents to report all bats found in the home because of the risk of rabies.

It’s especially important to report bats found in areas where people sleep, even when you’re not sure whether you’ve been bitten and exposed to their saliva, because bat bites can be so tiny they may leave no marks visible to the naked eye and so painless they may not even be felt by someone while sleeping.

Bat encounters should be reported to the Health Department immediately by calling 412-687-ACHD. Health officials will evaluate the risk and test the bat to determine if it’s rabid and anyone should be treated with anti-rabies vaccine.

When a bat is found, wear a pair of heavy-duty rubber gloves and place a container such as a large bowl or empty coffee can over it, slide a piece of cardboard underneath to trap the bat inside, cover the container with a lid or cap, and then submit the bat to the Health Department for testing.

Comcast Corp. this week launched Internet Essentials, which it calls “an ambitious and comprehensive broadband adoption experiment”—providing monthly Internet access for $9.95 for qualifying families.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced that applications are available for the City’s third Civic Leadership Academy (CLA), a free 10-week course designed to educate residents about local government in the City of Pittsburgh.

Beginning September 14, and ending November 16, participants will attend weekly sessions focusing on different City departments and the services they provide to make for a safer, more livable City. City directors will develop their sessions with tours, hands-on demonstrations, and fun activities to provide an up-close and personal view of how their department helps to operate the City.

The program consists of 10 consecutive sessions on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Session topics include city organization and vision; budgeting processes; city planning and economic development; public works and parks services; the protection of water and rivers; public safety efforts, and more. At the conclusion of the course, the Mayor will lead a graduation ceremony where participants will be awarded certificates.

Students are expected to participate in a group, participant-led service project at the conclusion of the course. This project will build on the knowledge gained in the sessions, address a need in the City of Pittsburgh, and be completed within six months of the graduation ceremony. Past service projects have included planting native plants at the Larimer Community Garden and launching a recycling awareness campaign at community festivals across the City.

Applicants to the program must be at least 18-years-old and live within Pittsburgh City limits and/or be a business owner who operates a business within Pittsburgh City limits. Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today called on citizens to help complete the City’s inventory of war monuments and memorials. In addition to the City’s current list of over 90 war monuments, the City’s Department of Public Works and City Planning is coordinating the effort by asking community members to help in identifying other neighborhood memorials by complete a War Monument Identification form located here.

War monuments could be objects such as a memorial, honor roll, artwork, or monument pertaining to any war or individuals who served in a war, including plaques, free-standing sculpture, and/or free-standing stone or bronze monuments.

The City is asking that residents please complete the online or paper form and return the form to the Public Art Manager by close of business, Thursday, September 1st, 2011, either by digital form, fax, email, or hard copy.

Once information is received from the public, location and condition data will be integrated into a database to create the complete inventory. Then, City staff will perform on-site condition evaluations of each piece and a professional conservator will provide a long-term maintenance plan for these pieces.

This Citywide project has been created and will be completed in collaboration with the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, the Senator John Heinz History Center, the Northside Leadership Conference and the help of the Veterans and community organizations throughout the City.

Homeowners can apply NOW for the federal Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program (EHLP) if they are unable to make their monthly mortgage payments because of job loss or income reduction. This program will only be available through September 30, 2011. Homeowners facing foreclosure should call 1.800.342.2397 right away to get help.

They may be eligible for a loan of up to $50,000 or 24 months of mortgage payment assistance if they:

Have a loss of at least 15% of income;
Have missed at least three mortgage payments or received a foreclosure notice due to job loss, income reduction and/or illness;
Are likely to be able to start making payments again within two years;
Are at or below 120% of area median income;
Are applying for help with a mortgage on their primary residence, which is a 1 - 4 family house.

Summer Food Sites- Free Meals for Children in Need!

Children from low-income households can visit 11 new sites throughout the city and county to be fed free breakfasts, lunches and snacks this summer, thanks to work by South side-based anti-hunger nonprofit Just Harvest.

For the past several years, Just Harvest has been working to help establish new sites that administer the federal Summer Food Service Program in underserved areas throughout the city and county. Since many children depend upon school meals to meet regular nutrition needs, hundreds in our region would go hungry during the summer months if not for Summer Food sites.

This year’s success in helping to establish the new sites is due in part to collaboration with the newly formed Southwestern Pennsylvania Food Security Partnership. The partnership brings together area human service agencies and nonprofits that work to increase access to food for low-income residents. In addition to the 11 new sites, four others are pending.

Due to the recent economic downturn, many Summer Food sites had not opened for the past few years because of a lack of funding for staff. This year, Just Harvest is coordinating welfare-to-work (paid work experience) participants, workers from the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh’s Mature Workers program, and FOCUS (Food, Occupation, Clothing, Understanding, and Shelter) Pittsburgh to help staff some of the Summer Food sites.

Just Harvest is again offering a Summer Food Hotline (1-888-FOOD-210) to answer all questions regarding site locations and hours of operation. In addition, a Summer Food site map of Allegheny County listing site hours and addresses is accessible at www.justharvest.org.

Student Aid Deadline

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is reminding students and families that the application filing deadline for the Pennsylvania State Grant Program is May 1. This deadline applies to all new applicants who plan to enroll in an undergraduate baccalaureate degree program, a college transfer program at two-year public or junior colleges, and all renewal applicants.

To determine eligibility for a need-based State Grant, families must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applicants can access the FAFSA online at either PHEAA.org/FAFSA or fafsa.gov. Completing the FAFSA online saves time and helps eliminate errors.

In addition to the FAFSA, applicants must complete a Pennsylvania State Grant Form (SGF) which can be accessed directly from the FAFSA on the Web by following the click-through on the FAFSA confirmation page. The SGF collects additional data elements not requested on the federal application and is only required for first-time State Grant applicants.

Students who have already submitted their FAFSA but have not submitted their SGF will be invited by email to visit Account Access through the Secure Sign-in at PHEAA.org to complete their State Grant Form.

The Pennsylvania State Grant Program is administered by PHEAA at no cost to taxpayers, allowing every appropriated dollar to go directly to students. Approximately 185,000 awards were disbursed to students for the 2010-11 academic year.

Students who are first-time applicants planning to enroll in a business, trade or technical school, a hospital school of nursing, or a terminal (non-transferable two-year degree) program at a community, junior or four-year college have until August 1 to file their FAFSA to determine eligibility for a State Grant award.

* Participate in meetings related to the reconstruction of the public infrastructure in the Penn Avenue commercial district, and the possible creation of a business improvement district in the Corridor, and accept any tasks that are assigned, relative to communicating with, or receiving input from, business and property owners relative to either of these developments.

* Use The Bulletin newspaper, organizational websites, and other media forms, to promote events, activities, and projects related to implementing the workplan for the MainStreets program and educating the public on its on-going efforts and accomplishments.

* Prepare reports on program accomplishments, and invoices for reimbursement of funds expended, to be submitted to the URA on a quarterly basis at a minimum. Assist the BGC and FDA in writing and submitting the proposal for 2012 Mainstreets program funding. Attend any conferences and seminars as required either by the BGC and FDA, or by the URA, in order to remain in compliance with the Mainstreets contract.

GoodGuides® Youth Mentoring, a program of Goodwill Southwestern Pa., is open to local youths between the ages of 12 and 17. In order for the youth mentoring program to succeed, Goodwill is seeking caring adult volunteers who enjoy working with youth to serve as role models and mentors. The commitment is only two hours per week, one evening a week. This is a wonderful opportunity to impact the lives of local youths.

The program focuses on helping youths set goals and explore career options while helping them realize the value of education and opening their eyes to the possibilities around them. The youths participate in mini-workshops on self-esteem, decision making, and conflict resolution, while setting goals and making plans for careers. They also are involved in designing and implementing community service projects and are developing leadership skills. They also have the opportunity to learn about digital photography, financial literacy, health and nutrition, and other activity modules designed to help the youth grow and develop.

Currently one group of youths meet on Thursdays and a second group (all girls) will begin to meet on Wednesdays at the new Goodwill site on 52nd Street. There are 10 open spots available for local girls; if you know of any youth who could benefit from either of the mentoring program. Regional Representatives of the Pennsylvania Women's Agriculture Network have planned a networking opportunity for new and seasoned farmers and members of the network to connect over a potluck lunch and symposium titled “Living the Good Life: Laugh Often, Dream Big, Reach for the Stars.”

On February 26, women farmers -- and that includes urban farmers -- will meet at Chatham University's Eden Hall Campus and Farm for a day of inspiration, friendship, and laughter.

The event, which is sponsored by USDA's National Institute of Food & Agriculture, Whole Foods Market and Chatham University's Food Studies Program, will feature inspirational speakers Maureen Murray, a national speaker, trainer, and coach; Alice Julier, Program Director of Chatham's Graduate Program in Food Studies; and Laverne Baker Hotep, director of Community Arts, Education and Outreach at The Center for Victims of Violence and Crime.

After a potluck lunch, women farmers will share hilarious accounts of life on the farm. Proving that a job requirement for women farmers is a sense of humor, women farmers will reveal the nitty-gritty truth about rural life – from an 80-pound greased pig in the bathtub to 350 chicks in the living room, these women have seen it all. Representatives from Table Magazine, The Post-Gazette, East End Food Coop, and Whole Foods Market will judge this light-hearted competition. Prizes will be awarded for the best stories.

Community LEARNS Program Overview

Community LEARNS is an afterschool program with a strong academic focus serving principally lower income and African American students. The main program is offered at Pittsburgh Peabody and includes numerous program components that need to be coordinated to ensure students have the greatest opportunity to have school success including graduation and Promise readiness.

Job Summary

The incumbent coordinates all of the initiatives and services of the Community LEARNS program, working collaboratively with Community LEARNS community, faith, and school partners to plan and administer program services and ensure that all program outcomes are achieved in a timely manner.

Duties/Responsibilities

Oversees the implementation of the all Wireless Neighborhoods afterschool grants.
Ensures all process and program outcomes are being accomplished
Manages all components of the Community LEARNS programs including academics/tutoring, college preparation, recreation, and employment.
Develops all program components and initiatives.
Assists Executive leadership team with the development of all program proposals.
Creates strong working relationship with school principals and other relevant staff, parents and community partners.
Recommends staff to be hired for Community LEARNS.
Manage the orientation of all new staff and the ongoing development of all program staff
Supervises all program staff.
Monitors student enrollment and participation rates and works with staff to take appropriate corrective actions when necessary.
Monitors and adjusts overall staffing of program sites/services.
Develops and monitors mechanisms for tracking all program outcome data.
Develops all program and funder reports.
Creates weekly participant and staff schedules with input from coordinators and monitors the daily staff schedules that are created.
Monitors program documentation/data for all sites, including but not limited to individual participant files, registration and release forms, participant Education and Career Success Plans (ECS’s), service documentation, daily participant sign-in and sign-out sheets, monthly attendance spreadsheets, weekly reports, monthly reports, spreadsheets, and databases.
Oversees the development of all student Academic Service Plans (ASPs) and ensures that all participants are participating in appropriate program components.
Regularly collects data from school on attendance, grades, standardized test scores, disciplinary actions, etc. to connect youth to the appropriate afterschool academic services. Develops and maintains a long-term tracking system for the data.
Works with school counselors, Community LEARNS staff and other community partners to ensure that students are receiving the most appropriate set of afterschool academic and support services.
Documents the program model so that it can be shared with other organizations seeking to serve high school and middle school students.
Performs any and all other duties assigned for which the employee is qualified and physically able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Education, Public Administration or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
At least 3 years of program management experience
Criminal, Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Clearances
A valid PA drivers license and functioning vehicle

Working Conditions

The incumbent generally performs the duties of the position at a desk or workstation. He/she will have extensive direct contact with clients and will spend some time out of the office. Extensive communication with other agencies, school personnel and employers is necessary. The position involves using a computer, modem, copy machine, telephone, and periodic automobile transportation will be necessary. The position involves working with highly confidential information.

Winter Driving Tips

Residents throughout the entire Southwestern Pennsylvania Region are digging out from the recent snow storm, and with more winter weather predicted for the coming days, conditions could get worse.

Wintry weather creates numerous dangers for people of all ages, and none of these dangers is greater than driving in the snow. The American Red Cross – which is dedicated to helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies – urges residents to be safe during winter storms.

Red Cross officials recommend avoiding driving during wintry conditions unless absolutely necessary. For those who do need to drive in the snow, the Red Cross offers the following safety tips:

General Traveling

Tell another individual your destination and planned route so that if you get stuck, help will be sent.
Fill up gas tank before weather hits, and don’t let the gas level approach empty.
Keep an ear tuned to the radio for information on the latest road conditions.
Drive with headlights on.
Keep all windows clear of snow and ice for maximum visibility.
Leave extra space between your vehicle and others on the road.
Remember bridges and overpasses usually freeze before other roads.
Always wear a seat belt.
Bring a fully-charged cell phone and emergency phone numbers.
Keep a disaster supplies travel kit in all vehicles containing blankets, extra warm clothes, a flashlight, extra batteries, bottled water, ready-to-eat food, can opener, jumper cables, roadmaps, shovel, knife, tire repair kit, tow rope, and a bag of cat litter or sand (for traction).

If You Get Stranded

Stranded drivers should stay with their vehicles. Leaving to find help can be very dangerous, and even deadly.
Tie a piece of cloth to the cars antenna to signify that you need help.
If you have a cell phone and are in service range, call for help. However, use the cell phone sparingly to save battery power.
Run the engine and use the heater for ten minutes out of every hour, keep interior lights on only while engine is running.
Reduce the chances of hypothermia by constantly moving arms and legs.
Use blankets, water, and non-perishable foods to stay warm and nourished (see above).
